The Zimbabwe Institute of Geomatics (ZIG) conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place from the 20th to the 21st of October this year at Conquenar House in Harare.
Running under the theme: Geomatics in Sustainable Waste, Water and Transport Infrastructure Management, the conference attracted both local and international stakeholders, industry experts and academia in the Geomatics profession.
The first day of the conference saw various presentations from organizations such as Digital Earth Africa, OPTRON, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, Drone Solutions and the GeoPomona project which is turning waste into energy. The inspiring and insightful presentations and panel engagements provided an opportunity for the delegates to network and craft solutions, policy and brainstorm around developing the nation in the Waste Water and Transport sectors.
Taking place later on during the conference day was the ZIG awards ceremony which recognized efforts by Geomaticians in Zimbabwe in various sectors and initiatives that have been contributing immensely towards the profession.
Two of the awards that were given out during the conference were dedicated and scoped by African Surveyors Connect. The awards were in the following categories:
- Best Corporate of the year in Advancing Geomatics Matters and
- Humanitarian Action Award through Geomatics
This recognition will go a long way in strengthening the efforts the Non-Profit organization has been making towards Humanitarian needs and advancing geomatics through various initiatives.
This also follows, some months after the released of the Issue 04 of The Spatial Times magazine which gave a spotlight on Geospatial for Humanitarian Action.
Other initiatives that are advancing Geomatics matters include the She Speaks Spatial Show which is led by Miss Letwin Pondo, the Geospatial Podcast, GIS Day Challenges, and the upcoming Geospatial Academy among others.
