Taking place in Firenze, Italy between the 19th – 21st of August was the State of the Map 2022 in which the #OpenStreeMap community made noise all over social media especially on twitter.
State of the Map is the annual event for all mappers and OpenStreetMap users. In 2022 the State of the Map conference was a three day hybrid conference taking place in Florence, Italy and online. The conference took place before the FOSS4G 2022 conference, which is also in Firenze on August 22 to 28, 2022 ( a few hours after SOM2022 ends).
It also happens that this was the first hybrid SOM event with the previous two year events (2021 and 2020) being held virtually owing to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in massive lockdowns being imposed on various nations.
The conference rocked Twitter with the hashtag #SotM2022.
Social Media Highlights from the conference
Here are some of the social media buzzes that caught our attention and we could not resist and remain silent.
A presentation by United Nations Mappers on how #OSM is being used for the United Nations in virtual reality applications that support peacekeeping.

How Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) is leveraging on data from #OSM to provide and effective analysis for setting up vaccination sites across countries and regions. This initiative is under the health drive to protect the general population of countries against infections.
I love how @MSF are able to quickly process @openstreetmap data to determine where to setup vaccination sites to maximise vaccination uptake and protect residents.#SotM2022 #MissingMaps pic.twitter.com/OY6E5o2M9R

Marking the close of the conference, was a closing ovation for the brilliant organizing team which took their time and resources to come up with this event despite the difficult and trending health pandemic times but still made it.

The just ended conference paves way for yet another conference in Firenze, Italy which is the FoSS4G. Find out more about FOSS4G here.
