Mappy Birthday Open Street Map

The famous and most used Open Street Map (OSM) turns 17-years old today. I am pretty sure every one in the mapping community or anyone who has ever used a map before knows what Open Street Map.

Just a Brief Introduction to OSM

OpenStreetMap is a free, editable map of the whole world that is being built by volunteers largely from scratch and released with an open-content license.

The OpenStreetMap License allows free (or almost free) access to our map images and all of our underlying map data. The project aims to promote new and interesting uses of this data.

Birthday Celebrations

Users, contributors and map makers from around the world are celebrating this day in different styles just to honor the project. The most famous event is the 17-hour long Mapathon which is being hosted in various nations or if I may say, the most active Nations when it comes to OSM.

This year the project birthday, the OpenStreetMap 17th Anniversary Birthday party will be celebrated on or around 8th August 2021 in cities all around the world! In some cities, people might meet even a week later

Open Street Map – Wiki

There is definitely no limitation as to how you can celebrate this birthday. Here is a couple of ideas that have been listed on the Wiki Pages:

  • Post why you love OpenStreetMap.
  • Post a photo of yourself with a message 🙂
  • Use the hashtag #OpenStreetMap17 on social media
  • Make/order a birthday cake. See previous examples of OSM cakes for inspiration. Don’t forget the attribution!
  • If your photos are accompanied with the text “CC-BY-SA 2.0” (or another open license), we can add them to this page (or feel free to add them yourself!).

Participating countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Belgium, Turkey, Japan, among others have listed their events on the Open Street Map wiki page.
